First shown by Aston Martin at the 2003 Frankfurt Auto Show, the Aston Martin DB9 was introduced in 2004 and was the first to be produced at Aston’s new Gaydon, Warwickshire (UK) factory. Designed by Henrik Fisker from the outset to be a 2+2 coupe with a convertible derivative (known as the Volante), the Aston Martin DB9 is based on the 'Vertical Horizontal' (VH) platform, it utilised an aluminium-bonded body frame with a sensuously styled curvaceous body. Mounted within was a 5953cc 450bhp V12 (from the Vanquish) that ran the DB9 to a 300km/h top speed, matched to either a transaxle-mounted (for better weight distribution) 6-speed manual (by Graziano) or automatic (by ZF) transmission. Of course, the interior was a luxurious delight, with fillets of aluminium hinting at sportiness and offsetting the usual accompaniment of equipment and full leather Aston trimmings. The successor to the DB7, the DB9 was facelifted in 2013 with many improvements to the design, the engine and the overall driving experience. Production of the DB9 ended after 12 years in 2016, having been replaced by the DB11 which uses an all-new platform and engine. A delight to be seen in, as well as to drive, the Aston Martin DB9 formed a key part of the foundation that has seen Aston Martin remain successful to this day.
