Announced in March 1984, Holden's VK Commodore was the fourth and biggest revamp of the model to date, with updated styling both inside and out. The facelifted exterior was distinguished by a new six-window design, featuring an additional quarter window behind the rear doors, while a new louvered grille and integrated bumpers helped modernise the cars general appearance. For many pundits the VK was - and still is - the best looking of the first generation Commodores and they retain a loyal following with enthusiasts today. The VK's interior was markedly improved, with a new geometrical instrument cluster and better equipment levels across the range, including Eurovox digital display stereos and a new heater/demister system. The model line-up consisted of the SL, Berlina (which replaced the SL/X) and new top-of-the-range Calais, replacing the SL/E. The standard engine was the 3.3-litre six, equipped with new Electronic Spark Timing (EST) engine management, while Bosch LE-Jetronic fuel injection was an option on cheaper models and standard on the Calais. Only one V8 was available, albeit in various guises as the 5.0-litre unit had to be de-stroked from 5044cc to 4979cc in early 1985 to meet new Group A regulations for touring car racing. Indeed, Peter Brock's HDT Group A homologation special, nicknamed the 'Blue Meanie' due to its distinctive colour, has become one of Australia's most coveted muscle cars.
