Launched in 1929, just over twelve months after first being announced, one of Harley-Davidson's most significant and enduring models, the D, was the first generation of the new 'flathead' 45-inch V-twin engine. Sold as the D, DS (sidecar), DL (high compression sports solo) and DLD (Special Sports Solo), the new Harley's v-twin motor developed around 22hp and had a top speed of approximately 65mph. Designed by engineer Arthur Constantine, the 'flathead' V-twin was intended as a competitor for the Indian 101 Scout and Excelsior's Super X. The early Ds used a frame similar to the existing singles but its limitations were quickly recognised and a sturdy new frame with better ground clearance and lower saddle position soon introduced. The Model D's styling, with twin bullet headlamps, certainly looked the part and the location of its vertical generator resulted in the nickname ?The Three Cylinder Harley?. However the timing of the Model D's announcement, just as the stock market crashed, saw sales initially struggle but Harley-Davidson weathered the storm and the 45-cid V-twin ultimately evolved to become the Model W of 1937.
